John Knezovich, Ph.D. was appointed by the Executive Committee as the TSR&TP Director in October 2004. Knezovich is an adjunct Professor of Environmental Toxicology at UC Davis and a senior scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He served as a member of the TSR&TP executive committee in the 1990s, and was an associate director of the program from 2002-2004. As director, he is focused on establishing new interdisciplinary research and education programs that meet existing and emerging needs within California.
Knezovich is an environmental chemist who has extensive experience in the design and application of experimental approaches for determining the fate, transport and toxicity of contaminants in the environment. In particular, he has assessed the bioavailability of heavy metals that are discharged from nuclear power stations; assisted the EPA's Office of Toxic Substances in the development of risk assessment strategies for the registration of new chemical products; evaluated the potential impacts of mutagenic contaminants and radiation on aquatic organisms; and assessed the risks posed by sediment-sorbed contaminants.
Knezovich received a B.A. in Biology from the University of the Pacific in 1977 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Ecology from UC Davis in 1983. He originally joined Lawrence Livermore as a student guest in 1977 and returned as a postdoctoral scientist in the Environmental Sciences Division in 1983. He became the group leader for Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology in 1993 and has been the director of the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (CAMS) since 1998. As director of CAMS, he oversees a team of scientists who apply state of the art ion-beam techniques to environmental, biomedical, and national security research. CAMS is the NIH National Research Resource for biomedical applications of AMS and serves as a resource to the UC research community.
