UC Toxics News: Fall 2007
There is a current upswing in attention being paid to toxic substances that are present in our everyday environment. Overall, research is evolving from the study of legacy wastes (e.g., PCBs) to chemicals that are present in our everyday lives (e.g., pharmaceuticals and personal care products). In California, legislators and state agencies are moving forward with programs that address biomonitoring and comprehensive approaches for green chemistry. There is clearly a continuing need for sound research that will be needed to inform policy in these and other areas. A significant role of the TSR&TP is to bring UC expertise to bear on high priority research needs. At this time, our annual call for proposals for Student Fellowships, New Investigator Grants and a new Lead Campus program has been issued. In recognition of increased costs of graduate student support, the TSR&TP Executive Committee has elected to increase the maximum amount of funds available for Student Fellowships and New Investigator awards. These awards can now be as much as $30 and $40K per year, respectively. The deadline for submittal of these proposals is January 31, 2008. Proposals for a new Lead Campus program are due on February 28, 2008. We look for the lead campus program to develop interdisciplinary approaches that will lead to new and sustainable research and education activities. The new lead campus will be joining our continuing Lead Campus programs in Aerosols & Health and Nanotoxicology as the flagships of the TSR&TP. Faculty and students interested in submitting proposals to any category are encouraged to examine the current list of Research Needs at the TSR&TP website. In addition, studies that we have previously funded can be reviewed by using the Abstracts Search. |
