New Lead Campus in Green Materials |
|
The new TSR&TP
lead campus program in Green Materials begins in July 2008 at UC Irvine,
UC Riverside, and UC Davis. This new program will use innovative
multidisciplinary approaches to characterize toxic risks of materials and develop
strategies for managing risk while paying attention to consumer
preferences and the role of government policies in protecting the public
Graduate students will be trained to approach materials science,
toxicology, environmental engineering and technologies, and the social sciences in interdisciplinary collaboration.

Daniel Nomura Wins Best Poster at TSR&TP Symposium 2008 |

Daniel Nomura, UC Berkeley doctoral student won the best
poster award at the 2008 TSR&TP Symposium in Riverside for his poster
titled "Maximal activation of the endocannabinoid system by organophosphorus nerve poisons".
Two honorable mention awards were given to Rebecca Werlin of UC Santa Barbara for
"Toward rapid, sensitive and discriminating detection of toxic
nanoparticles and soluble compounds in the environment using
the model protozoan, Tetrahymena", and Carolina Reyes of UC Santa Cruz
for "Reduction of arsenate-coated iron(III) minerals by Shewanella ANA-3".
Posters were evaluated by members of the TSR&TP Executive Committee
for their ability to communicate science to a broad
audience, scientific content, creativity, and visual presentation. Each
winner received an iPod and Nomura also received a $500 travel
award for collaboration at another UC campus or for presenting research
at a scientific meeting.

TSR&TP Student Featured in
January 2008 Regents' Report |

Nature McGinn, a TSR&TP fellowship recipient from 2006 was chosen
as one of five graduate students whose research was featured in UC
President Robert Dynes' report at the January 2008 Regents Meeting.
McGinn is a UC Davis doctoral student researching how public disposal of
pharmaceutical products is affecting wastewater streams and coastal
marine environments. As an adjunct to her research, she organized
an international symposium on fisheries and climate change.
